About the Artist:
Sylvia Gormley is a distinguished artist whose roots and inspiration deeply intertwine with the rich cultural and historical tapestry of New Mexico. Born in Tucumcari, Sylvia's life narrative is a testament to the profound influence of her home state, a place where her grandparents homesteaded in 1900, back when it was still considered Indian Territory. The legacy of the Killgore Ranch, established by her grandparents outside Tucumcari, has played a significant role in shaping her artistic journey.
From a very young age, Sylvia was captivated by the world of art, a passion that has guided her through a fulfilling journey of exploration and creation. Her academic pursuit at the University of New Mexico, where she majored in Business and minored in Art, provided a foundation that would support her dream of becoming an artist, alongside her cherished roles as a wife and mother. It was at the university that she met her husband, marking the beginning of a partnership that would support her throughout her artistic endeavors.
Sylvia's artistic repertoire is diverse, spanning from early experiments with drawing and coloring to mastering palette-knife oils, watercolors, mixed media, and the creation of beaded and polymer jewelry. Her commitment to her craft led to the establishment of the Galeria de Corrales, a co-op gallery that stands as a testament to her dedication to fostering community among artists. This initiative marks the fourth co-op gallery Sylvia has been instrumental in founding, highlighting her role as a community leader and advocate for the arts.
Over the years, Sylvia has completed and sold over 1000 pieces of art, a milestone that speaks volumes about her talent and the resonance of her work with collectors and art enthusiasts. Beyond her success as an artist, Sylvia has shared her knowledge and passion through teaching oil and watercolor classes since 1975, both in private settings and at community colleges. Her philosophy that one should never cease to evolve artistically underscores her approach to both her own work and her mentorship of others. Sylvia believes in constantly experimenting and adopting new techniques, a principle that ensures her art continues to captivate and inspire in "many wonderful ways."
Sylvia Gormley's journey is a celebration of New Mexico's influence, the power of community, and the relentless pursuit of artistic evolution. Her legacy not only lives through her extensive body of work but also in the hearts and minds of those she has taught and inspired along the way.
