About the Artist:
Crucita Gonzales Calabaza, also known as Blue Corn (1921-1999), was born in San Ildefonso around 1923 and received early encouragement from her grandmother to pursue pottery despite attending school both at the pueblo and later at the Santa Fe Indian School. In her twenties, she married Santiago (Sandy) Calabazas, a Kewa Pueblo (Santo Domingo) silversmith, and worked as a housecleaner at Los Alamos during the 1940s. It wasn't until after World War II that she began pottery making, ultimately finding her true passion. In 1981, she received New Mexico's highest artistic honor, the "Governor's Award," for her exacting and innovative pottery designs. Even after her passing, Blue Corn's pottery remains influential and highly sought after, earning her the posthumous 2008 "Lifetime Achievement Award" from SWAIA and inclusion in "Legacy of Generations."
