About the Artist:
Friar Vincent Petersen: A Journey of Faith and Art
Friar Vincent Petersen stands at the confluence of spirituality and environmental artistry, painting the world with the strokes of his deep faith and profound reverence for nature. Born and raised amidst the verdant landscapes of rural Minnesota, Vincent's early life was a testament to the beauty and mystique of the Earth. The changing seasons, diverse moods, and intricate shapes of creation nurtured in him an understanding of God and spirituality that would shape his life's work.
As a devout Catholic priest and a dedicated Conventual Franciscan friar of the Province of Our Lady of Consolation, Vincent's spirituality is deeply intertwined with his artistic endeavors. He draws inspiration from the Franciscan tradition, particularly influenced by St. Bonaventure's assertion that creation itself is the first book of revelation. This spiritual grounding infuses his art, driving him to explore and express the divine through the medium of Earth's landscapes.
Vincent's artistic journey took a significant turn during his ministry in the Southwest from 1997 to 2015, where the unique landscapes of the region deeply influenced his work. It was here, in 2006, during an exhibition aimed at preserving local open spaces and habitats, that Vincent's artistry first gained public attention. This event marked the beginning of his professional recognition, culminating in his first one-artist show at the Hal Marcus Gallery in El Paso, Texas. His works, which continue to be displayed at the gallery and featured on its website, capture the essence of the Southwest's beauty.
Currently, Friar Vincent serves in ministry at Mount St. Francis in Southern Indiana, where his roles span retreat ministry to teaching art classes. Despite his varied responsibilities, he maintains a rigorous studio schedule, dedicating himself to his art. His "Earthscapes" collection, in particular, showcases his ability to capture both the grandeur of the wild and the quiet beauty of the more familiar landscapes. Through his work, Vincent seeks to draw attention to the Earth's vulnerability, inspired by Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter, "Laudato Si – On Care for Our Common Home." His art becomes a vehicle for awakening public consciousness to the beauty of our planet and the perils it faces from human greed and indifference.
Vincent's educational background, with a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts from St. Louis University and a Master of Divinity from the Washington Theological Union, complements his artistic and spiritual pursuits. His activism extends beyond the canvas, encompassing a life-long commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of the environment. From opposing war and militarism to advocating for racial justice and the defense of the unborn, Vincent's life is a testament to a holistic approach to faith and activism, grounded in the belief that seeking the divine necessitates a reverence for all creation.
Friar Vincent Petersen's journey is a beacon of how faith and art can merge, offering a profound message of love, respect, and stewardship for the Earth. Through his paintings, activism, and ministry, he continues to inspire and challenge us to see the world through a lens of beauty, spirituality, and responsibility.
