Iroquois False Face Mask "Whistler" by Darvis Thomas
The Iroquois False Face Masks are part of a sacred healing tradition used by the False Face Society, a group within the Iroquois Confederacy which is composed of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora tribes. These masks are carved directly from living trees, typically basswood, and are believed to house spirits that can heal and bestow protection. The "Whistler" design is one of the many styles used in ceremonies, characterized by its pursed lips as if it is whistling.
