About the Artist:
André Dunoyer de Segonzac was a distinguished French painter and graphic artist, celebrated for his versatility across various mediums including oil paintings, watercolors, and etchings. Born on July 6, 1884, in Boussy-Saint-Antoine, he spent his formative years in Paris. His artistic journey began in earnest after military service and studies at the Académie de La Palette. Known for his participation in the 1913 Armory Show in New York and his membership in the avant-garde Section d'Or group, Segonzac's career was marked by innovative contributions to modern art. His experiences as a soldier in World War I deeply influenced his work, leading to a series of war drawings and etchings that earned him widespread acclaim.
Segonzac's expertise in etching, which he discovered post-war, resulted in about 1600 plates, including his notable illustrations for Roland Dorgelès's "The Wooden Crosses." His mastery in this medium is evident in his 1947 etchings for Virgil's Georgics, hailed as one of the 20th century's most beautifully illustrated books. His art, encompassing a range from delicate etchings to vibrant oil paintings, showcases a profound admiration for Courbet and Cézanne. Segonzac's diverse subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, and nudes, have left a significant impact on the art world. He remained prolific until his death on September 17, 1974, leaving behind a legacy as a transformative and influential artist.
