The USS George Clymer (APA-27) holds a distinguished place in U.S. naval history, named in honor of American Founding Father George Clymer and commissioned in June 1942. Its service spanned across four wars, starting with World War II, where it played a significant role in the invasion of French Morocco. In the Pacific, it was integral to key operations such as the invasions of Bougainville, the Marianas, Leyte, and Okinawa, embodying the essence of a reliable and resilient attack transport.
Post-World War II, the USS George Clymer continued its service, participating in atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll and aiding in the Chinese Civil War. Its involvement in the Korean War further underscored its strategic importance, where it facilitated critical troop deployments and amphibious landings in pivotal areas like Pusan and Inchon. The ship's adaptability and endurance were again on display during the Vietnam War, participating in operations at Da Nang and Chu Lai, and earning the nickname "Greasy George" following a mechanical breakdown.
