About the Artist:

Michael Garman, an esteemed American sculptor, was born in 1938 in Fort Worth, Texas, and grew up in Arlington. At the tender age of eight, he began crafting figures from pipe cleaners, displaying an early flair for creativity and detail. He recalls fashioning detailed uniforms and accessories for his miniature soldiers and staging elaborate battle scenes that were both imaginative and emotional.

Garman's artistic journey took a pivotal turn in 1959 when he embarked on a hitchhiking adventure through Mexico, Central, and South America with just $35 and a camera. This journey, filled with unique experiences and encounters, profoundly influenced his artistic perspective. In Santiago, Chile, Garman honed his sculpting skills at the School of Fine Arts, where he began selling his works depicting everyday street scenes.

Upon returning to the U.S., Garman lived in various cities, including Dallas, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Colorado Springs. His sculptures, initially unique pieces, evolved to capture intricate details and real-life moments, influenced by the people he met during his travels. Garman then explored the art of reproduction, aiming to replicate the authenticity and richness of his original sculptures in each copy.

In the late 1960s, Garman settled in San Francisco's SoMa district, where his art took on a more realistic and gritty tone. During this period, he also worked at a local theatre company, gaining valuable skills in stagecraft and business.
