Vintage Hemis 'Tableta Dancer' Kachina By Diane Dailey
The Hemis Kachina is revered as one of the most renowned and visually striking of all Hopi Katsinas. Known for its towering stature and vivid array of colors, the Hemis Kachina stands out in collections for its intricate tableta headdress, contributing to both its height and allure. The body of the Kachina is traditionally adorned with black corn smut and light-colored half-moons on the chest, dressed in an exquisitely embroidered kilt.
The majestic tableta, often as large as the figure itself, features symbolic phallic and cloud motifs, crowned with an array of feathers. This Kachina is central to Hopi ceremonies, especially the Niman Ceremony, celebrated in isolation except for the company of Hemis Manas. These respected figures of the community set the dance's rhythm, echoing distant thunder with their instruments.
Our Hemis 'Tableta Dancer' Kachina, crafted by Diane Dailey, captures the essence of this sacred figure with its vibrant colors, detailed painting, and dynamic composition. It carries the rhythmic accessories - rattles, shells, and bells - that bring the dance to life. While drawing inspiration from both Hopi and Jemez Pueblo traditions, this piece resonates with the cultural reverence of the Hemis Kachina dance and its deep-rooted symbolism.
