About Koshare Kachinas

Koshare, also known as the Hopi Clown Kachina, is a figure of great cultural importance among the Hopi people. This Kachina is often seen during ceremonies, providing amusement through its loud, boisterous antics and exaggerated behavior. The Koshare serves as a reminder of the importance of balance and moderation within the community by satirizing various aspects of Hopi life.

  • Watermelon: The watermelon carried by the Koshare is a symbol of abundance and also represents the gluttonous nature of mankind, a vice that the Kachina humorously exaggerates to teach the value of moderation.
