About Koshare Kachinas

Koshare, also known as the Hopi Clown Kachina, is a figure of great cultural importance among the Hopi people. This Kachina is often seen during ceremonies, providing amusement through its loud, boisterous antics and exaggerated behavior. The Koshare serves as a reminder of the importance of balance and moderation within the community by satirizing various aspects of Hopi life.

  • Watermelon: The watermelon carried by the Koshare is a symbol of abundance and also represents the gluttonous nature of mankind, a vice that the Kachina humorously exaggerates to teach the value of moderation.
  • Black and White Stripes: Traditionally painted with alternating black and white stripes, these colors symbolize the duality of human nature, blending the spiritual with the mundane.
  • Corn Husks: Adorning the hair, corn husks resemble horns and represent fertility and growth, while owl feathers symbolize wisdom and the Kachina's connection to the spiritual realm.
