Description

Chinese Ethnographic Silver Necklace with Coral and Malachite

This is a piece of antique silver Chinese "Hundred Families Lock" 百家鎖 (a unique Chinese traditional lock) with a silver chain necklace. It is decorated with malachite beads, coral beads and silver beads. The back of the pendant is marked with the following Chinese symbols:
福 (fú) - meaning "happiness" or "good fortune", 祿 (lù) - meaning "prosperity" or "official salary", 百 (bǎi) - meaning "hundred", 家 (jiā) - meaning "families" or "home", 鎖 (suǒ) - meaning "lock".

Put together, "福 祿" conveys a wish for happiness and prosperity, commonly seen in Chinese culture. "百家鎖" translates to "Hundred Families Lock," which is a traditional Chinese object often given as a talisman to bring good fortune and protection to a family, especially to infants for good health and a prosperous future.
