About the Hereke Weavers:
The village of Hereke is renowned for crafting the world's most exquisite hand-knotted carpets, symbolizing the apex of Turkish carpet weaving. Back in 1843, Sultan Abdulmecid, the Ottoman Emperor, established the Hereke Imperial Factory with a sole purpose: to create carpets, fabrics, upholstery, and curtains exclusively for the Ottoman Court. Sultan Abdulmecid believed that the grandest palaces in the world deserved nothing less than the finest carpets in existence.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hereke weavers dedicated their unparalleled craftsmanship to the Ottoman Empire's aristocracy, visiting dignitaries, and heads of state. These fine Hereke hand-knotted carpets were offered as prestigious gifts to royal families in Japan, Russia, Germany, England, and even the President of the United States.
What set Hereke carpets apart was their relentless pursuit of perfection. Hereke weavers utilized wool on cotton warps to create the highest quality carpets, and the introduction of silk from Bursa allowed for even finer hand-knotted creations. In 1894, a significant milestone was reached when German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II visited Hereke and brought with him colorfast and permanent chemical dyes, surpassing their natural counterparts. This technological leap allowed Hereke artisans to produce carpets of unparalleled quality.
