Nina Vaughan's "Basket Weaver"
Signature: Center Right - Nina (Vaughan)
Medium: Original Acrylic on Masonite
Subject: The artwork portrays an Indigenous Mexican artisan engaged in basket weaving.
Basket weaving stands as one of Mesoamerica's most ancient crafts, predating even the control of fire and the development of pottery. Its origin lies in the creation of simple containers used for gathering food and storage, later expanding to include other items such as mats, boxes, chairs, cradles, sandals, and various clothing items..
During the pre-Hispanic era, these objects were essential, as there were no beasts of burden and all merchandise was transported by people on foot.
