Description

Mexican Folk Art Angel Sculpture

  • Vintage Carved Wood Angel with Wings
  • Hand Carved and Painted
  • Soup For Scale

The chubby cheeked angel is recognizable as Nahua folk art from Guerrero, Mexico. Called "cachetones," these angels come in many forms--often like this, holding something from our daily lives. In this case, the angel is holding possibly bread or dough or a large squash. In this respect, the angel could be a blessing for the kitchen or the garden. This one has had lots of wear, some of which has been touched up although not restored. Places that are repaired are the toes and angel tips, in particular, so see Photo 10 for close ups. There are still plenty of places where the gesso and paint have chipped away or where there are dings and scratches in the wood. This angel is meant to hang on the wall, although there is no mechanism for hanging it. I can see where a hole is, and if you would like I can put a nail in it with wire for hanging.
