Description
12" Petrified Wood from Petrified Forest in Arizona
A polished decorative cross-section of a petrified trunk.
Petrified wood is a gigantic crystal made of almost solid quartz. The variations of color come from the impurities in the quartz primarily iron, carbon, and manganese, circa 211-218 million years ago, flourishing trees and vegetation covered much of the area of Northeastern Arizona, but volcanic eruptions destroyed the forests, and the remains were embedded into sediment consisting of volcanic ash and water.
