About the Artist:
Harry Benjamin

His Southwest-themed artwork included paintings, ceramics, corn angels, sculptures and Mimbres-style pottery. He had operated What’s a Pot Shop at 300 N. Arizona St. since 1982.

When Benjamin won a Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2008, it was said that “Silver City would not be Silver City without him.’

An article posted on the Internet about the award noted that Benjamin was the original curator of the Silver City Museum. He also was involved with Western New Mexico University, Cobre Schools, the Mimbres Region Arts Council and other art organizations. “Benjamin is best known for his stunning depiction of the southwestern New Mexico landscape and his wonderful, eclectic spirit,’ the article stated. A 40-year retrospective display of his work at the museum featured more than 80 paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages and ceramic works. The article noted that Benjamin “helped many artists in Silver City find gallery representation by taking them around to meet the owners and other artists.’ In a 2003 article posted at SouthernNewMexico.com, Jacqueline Shaw, artist and owner of the A.I.R. Espresso Bar in Silver City, said: “Few artists have so steeped their lives in their art. Harry paints some 10 hours a day. He has taught many of our youths to find and express the artists within themselves. He was a major factor in the establishment of the Silver City Museum. To all of us who practice art, Harry is a role model and an inspiration.’ She called Benjamin “probably the best artist in our area.’

“Nobody captures the soul of our magnificent outdoors like Harry does in his dramatic, realistic and beautiful landscapes,’ Shaw wrote. “Many of his pieces hang in local homes, businesses and public buildings. Others hang across the nation and abroad.’
