About the Maker:
Arne Hovmand-Olsen
Arne Hovmand-Olsen was a Mid-Century Modern designer born to a Danish farming family in 1919. He was interested in drawing and design early in life which caught the attention of his parents. Due to his natural talent, he began an early apprenticeship in a cabinet making shop run by P. Olsen Sibast. Shortly after, he attended a technical school in Arhus focusing on furniture making. Arne would soon start his own workshop and begin designing and creating his masterpieces. Due to Danish furniture being in high demand, Arne became a popular household name in the 1950s. His unique furniture line included beautiful lounge chairs, writing desks, and stools of Scandinavian design. While Arne only sold his furniture in Denmark, purchasers largely exported his furniture to the United States. Like most Mid-Century Modern furniture, Arne's designs included organic style, smooth lines, and functional forms. A popular choice of medium for the period, Arne favored rosewood and teak woods.

Some of the most famous and interesting pieces designed by Arne were the Surfboard coffee table, Evermore dining table, and the Noble dining chairs. The production of a tall, sleek grandfather clock is another highly collectible design by this mid century innovator. The clock has hidden shelves on the interior of the cabinet that adds functionality to the piece and stands on a curvaceous horn shaped base. Unfortunately illness forced Hovmand-Olsen to close his workshop in the 1970s. Although he passed away in 1989, these pieces have withstood the test of time and are highly coveted and still available for purchase today by both collectors and designers alike.
