Laura Gachupin Jemez Pottery Jar
Incised Signature "Laura Gachupin - Jemez" with her iconic cornstalk.
This thin-walled pottery jar from Jemez Pueblo was made by Laura Gachupin in the 1990's. It features a red shoulder, with a square opening, elegant melon-ribbed body, with ribs starting thin, expanding to wider at midpoint and getting smaller as they approach the base. The interior of the jar was smoothly finished.

Laura Gachupin
Jemez Pueblo artist Laura Gachupin (Nov 4, 1954- ) has won many awards for her pottery creations. Laura digs her own clay and makes beautiful traditional polished redware, ribbed melon jars, and swirl jars. She has demonstrated pottery making both in and out of the state of New Mexico.
Laura Gachupin was born into the Corn Clan and a large family of artists. Her sister is Maxine Toya, her mother was Marie Romero, and her grandmother was Persingula Gachupin. Her grandmother was her mentor. Laura taught her daughter, Benina Foley, to carry on the family tradition. Gachupin also studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
