About the Artist:
Ernest R. Begay Sr., a contemporary Diné jeweler from the Navajo Nation, hails from Kayenta - Chilchinbeto, AZ, where he was born in 1956. His journey into the world of jewelry making began in the 1970's and sparked Ernest's passion for jewelry creation. His interest was further nurtured by observing his brother-in-law and father-in-law, who not only crafted jewelry but also provided him with scrap silver for practice.
In his professional career, Ernest has distinguished himself as an accomplished educator, imparting his knowledge of jewelry making at Monument Valley High School. His exceptional skill and artistry have been consistently recognized at the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, where he has garnered the prestigious Best of Class award for five consecutive years. Ernest takes pride in his work, evident in each piece of jewelry he creates, marked with the signature stamp 'STERLING' and his initials 'ERB'.
