Description

Vintage Navajo 7 Strand Coral Necklace

Emanating traditional elegance, this vintage Navajo necklace features seven strands of polished red branch coral, artfully crafted by a Diné artist of the Navajo Nation in the mid twentieth century (see 1977 invoice!). The coral is kept in its natural form, reflecting its intrinsic beauty just as it appears in the wild, with each piece carefully cut, drilled, and polished to reveal a radiant sheen.

  • Consists of seven meticulously assembled strands.
  • Utilizes natural red branch coral, celebrated for its rich color and organic beauty.
  • Adorned with silver cones and a handcrafted silver clasp (hook and eye), hallmarks of Diné silversmithing.

Original 1977 Invoice:
Richard Begay Navajo Ring

The scarcity of high-quality coral today, exacerbated by heightened demand and overharvesting, makes this necklace a rare and valuable find. Coral, the skeletal remains of marine polyps, is highly prized, particularly in Southwestern jewelry, for its vibrant hues and organic origin. Its introduction to Navajo and Pueblo jewelers traces back to the early Spanish traders who sourced it from the Mediterranean.

Condition:

The necklace is in good condition, with the coral’s natural imperfections serving as a testament to its authenticity and enhancing its unique character.

Size and Weight:
The piece has a substantial feel, weighing 70.14 grams. It measures 24 inches in length, offering a bold yet harmonious drape around the neck.
