Mexican Folk Art Painted Terracotta Lidded Turtle Tureen
A hand-built terracotta turtle vessel from Mexico, the domed shell formed as a removable lid and the body hollowed to function as a covered bowl or tureen. The piece sits on four stout modeled legs, with the head and neck extending forward in profile. The burnished red-orange slip ground carries hand-painted decoration in cream and green: the shell is divided into overlapping scaled registers, each scale filled with fine parallel hatching, while the head is marked with a stylized green spiral at the eye and the toes are tipped in green.
The form belongs to a long tradition of Mexican animalito pottery — utilitarian and decorative vessels modeled as animals, produced across multiple regional pottery centers for domestic use and the tourist trade through the twentieth century. The fish-scale shell pattern, earth-toned palette, and slip-painted finish are consistent with hand-decorated wares from central Mexico.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear and minor imperfections throughout. Small chips and paint loss along the lid rim where the cover seats into the body, light surface abrasion to the slip on the shell, and scattered minor flaking to the green and cream decoration. Lid seats correctly.
