Adrian Insurance Co. $1 Obsolete Banknote, Michigan, ca. 1850s
Offered here is a scarce $1 obsolete banknote issued by the Adrian Insurance Company of Adrian, Michigan, circa 1852–1855. Printed by the renowned engravers Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., the note features striking imagery: a Native American figure at left, a central vignette of a farmer on horseback overseeing harvest laborers, and the company seal depicting a bear with a beehive and buildings. The large red “ONE” overprint adds bold visual appeal, with handwritten signatures and serial number enhancing authenticity.
This note reflects Michigan’s “wildcat banking” era, when private banks and insurance companies issued currency prior to the National Banking Acts. The Adrian Insurance Co., with a reported capital of $250,000, was among many institutions whose issues circulated locally before federal regulation. Surviving examples like this are prized today for their artistry and connection to Michigan’s early financial history. A desirable piece for collectors of obsolete currency and Americana.
