1935A Hawaii Overprint $1 Silver Certificate – WWII Emergency Issue
This is a 1935A $1 Silver Certificate, issued as part of the special World War II “Hawaii” emergency currency. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the U.S. government feared that an invasion of Hawaii might put large amounts of U.S. currency into enemy hands. To counter this, overprinted notes were introduced in 1942 for exclusive use in the islands. Distinctive in design, the front bears bold “HAWAII” overprints at left and right with a brown Treasury seal and serial numbers, while the reverse is marked with a large outlined “HAWAII” across the entire note.
These notes were redeemable only in Hawaii and could have been declared worthless if seized, making them a tangible piece of wartime monetary history. Today, they are prized by collectors for their historic context, rarity, and striking appearance. An essential addition for advanced numismatists and WWII memorabilia enthusiasts alike.
