1936 China 10 Yuan Banknote – Tibetan Overprint, Rare Transitional Issue
From a pivotal moment in Asian history is this 1936 Central Bank of China 10 Yuan note, later overprinted with Tibetan script during the Republic era. When the Chinese government extended authority over Tibet, original Tibetan banknotes were withdrawn and destroyed. In their place, Central Bank issues like this were circulated—distinguished by their red overprint on the obverse and black Tibetan script on the reverse.
The note itself is a striking artifact: the front shows the portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, founding father of modern China, framed by ornate borders and seals. The reverse depicts the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen) in Beijing, a powerful emblem of authority. The added Tibetan overprint bridges two worlds—linking Tibet’s traditional economy with China’s centralizing policies.
